Program Notes:

Let It Sound was a commission for the Nightmarket in Peterborough, NH on the theme of the 90s mixtape. I have fond memories of making and receiving mixtapes in my teenage years (and still have some buried away in boxes in our barn), and those memories were the foundation for this piece. As I was researching the topic, I came upon an article that proposed the idea that mixtapes were like a shortcut to a deeper connection with someone. By giving them a mixtape, you weren’t just saying “this is cool music,” you were saying “listen to this and you will know who I am.” And so this piece is the story of a girl on the threshold of adulthood who knows who she is and who she wants to be. She’s showing her true self to the world as she heads off into the universe to find, in the words of the poet Kim Park, “worlds to be ravenously lived upon.”
