Anyone any where in the world can participate, so long as they are willing to share their story openly and honestly.

Here’s how to record your story:

Record your replies to a few questions using a smartphone, and email it to me. It’s easy!

Prompt Questions:

  • How much loss has there been in your life?

  • Of all the things you’ve lost in your life, what one loss have you felt the lack of the most?

  • How did you come to lose it?

  • Before you lost this, what role did it play in your life?

  • What did what you’ve lost mean to you?

  • How has this loss changed you?

  • What’s different about your life after this loss?

  • Because of this loss, what have you found?

  • How does this loss show up in your life now?

1) Record.

  • Using a smartphone, record your replies to the prompt questions above. An app like Voice Memos for iPhone or Voice Recorder for Android works well!

  • If you don’t have access to a smartphone, or other way to record, I still want to hear from you! Email me, Katie, and I will make arrangements for you to record another way. Thank you!

  • Try to record somewhere quiet, away from fans, appliances, barking dogs, cars, etc. A closet is a great place to record—just remember not to whisper (it’s easy to feel like you need to whisper when you are hiding in a closet…)!

  • Record your replies off the cuff—just the way your thoughts and memories come to you. I’ll edit you, so don’t worry about mistakes! The most important thing is to speak from the heart.

  • People typically record for between 8-15 minutes, but feel free to say more if you want to!

  • All recordings will be anoymous! Your name will not be used.

2) Email your recording.

*By submitting your recording you are giving me permission to use your recording for the audio documentary Til it’s Gone — which will be played as part of an online event, and may be played at in person events around the world; on the documentary website; and for any other uses related to the documentary.

3) Listen

The stories of loss that you share will be made into the audio documentary Til it’s Gone.

I can’t guarantee that everyone who submits a recording will be in the documentary, but I will try to make it happen!

However, everyone who submits a recording will get a free ticket to the online listening event.

Even if you don’t want to share your story, everyone is invited to attend one of the online listening events to hear how these stories come together.

Tickets are be on sale through our Kickstarter. If you can’t make the events, visit the Kickstarter page to learn about other ways to listen.

Thank you so much for sharing your stories!

FAQs

What about loss through death?

Losing someone you care about to death is a huge thing, and it’s important to talk about these losses too, but for this project I want to focus on the other types of loss. Because these hidden losses are the ones that we don’t talk about much (enough), even thought they have a huge impact on our lives. So I want to make room for these losses, so that we can grieve them just as we’d grieve the death of a loved one.

Can I talk about a person I’ve lost not through death?

Yes, if you want to talk about someone you lost to estrangement, illness, absence — or even a lost love — that’s totally fine.

Is this only for _____ kind of people?

Nope! This is for anyone and everyone! I’d love to hear from you. We all have all lost something and if you want to share your loss, I want to hear it.

What if I’m having technical difficulties?

Get in touch! You can email me and I’ll do my best to help you out!

What if I don’t have a smartphone?

You can still participate! Please email me and we can figure out the best way for you to record your stories. Thank you!

How do I record on my smartphone?

If you have an iPhone you can use the Voice Memos app. Here are more details on how to use Voice Memos. If you have an Android phone you can try this Voice Recorder App. If you’re having any trouble, please get in touch.

How do I send in my recording?

Most files are small enough to email to me at ksemro@gmail.com. And most voice recording apps allow you to email the file straight from the app.

If your file is too big, try using WeTransfer—it’s a free service and you don’t need an account! Send the files to me at ksemro@gmail.com.

How long does it need to be?

There’s no magic length. Please feel free to say as much as you want. I won’t use everything you say because I edit a lot. But the more you say, the more I have to work with. Thank you!
